The Structure of the Tarot

The Major Arcana

The Major Arcana is composed of 22 trump cards, beginning with the Fool and concluding with the World. Collectively, they illustrate what is often called the Fool’s Journey. Each card individually tends to symbolize key life lessons, pivotal moments on a person’s emotional and spiritual path, and recurring themes that resonate throughout our shared human experience. Taken together, the Major Arcana forms a continuous cycle—one that, after reaching the World, inevitably returns to the Fool. This cyclical nature mirrors the ongoing processes of learning, growth, and expansion.

The Minor Arcana

The other subset of cards, known as the Minor Arcana, consists of four suits, each associated with one of the classical elements. Each suit contains cards numbered from 1 through 10, as well as four court cards, making a total of 14 cards per suit and 56 cards in the Minor Arcana as a whole.

Though the court cards are part of the Minor Arcana, we’ll explore them separately. The numbered cards (1 through 10) typically represent everyday situations and experiences. When we trace the Minor Arcana’s story, we encounter a narrative of creation and manifestation (moving from the energy of wands to the materiality of pentacles), as well as themes of redemption (shifting from pentacles back to wands).

The Court Cards

Within the Minor Arcana, the 16 court cards stand out as representations of individual personalities. In many traditional decks, these are the Pages, Knights, Queens, and Kings. They can signify real people in one’s life or characteristics and qualities that any one of us can embody.

Developing Your Archetypes

The exercises below are designed to deepen your understanding of the cards and foster a personal connection with each one. Your own experiences will inform the way these cards resonate with you, shaping your interpretations and readings. Each card worksheet will also feature a section on reversals. Reversals highlight how an archetype may appear when it becomes unbalanced—whether through excess or deficiency of its inherent energy. Remember, each archetype encompasses both strengths and weaknesses, positives and negatives.

The Fool’s Journey

The Major Arcana symbolizes the soul’s progression from innocence to fulfillment, often described as the Fool’s Journey. Each card reflects a step along this path—one that is both individual and universal. In our everyday lives, this journey unfolds continuously and without end. We are always moving through it, and it would be both arrogant and tragic to assume that, as humans, we could ever reach complete closure or perfection. Life is in a constant state of flux and evolution, and we are no different. Rather than viewing this as a shortcoming, it should be embraced as an integral part of our nature.

Septenaries

The 22 Major Arcana can be further organized into groupings that clarify each card’s role within the broader cycle. This is the concept behind Septenaries. The cards can be divided in the following manner.

CONSCIOUS UNCONSCIOUS SUPERCONSCIOUS
Cards 1 - 7 Cards 8 - 14 Cards 15 - 21
Rational Emotional Spiritual
Practical Concerns Search for Self Expansion of Soul
Learning Expression Integration

You’ll notice that Card 0, the Fool is missing from this list. This is because this is the Fool’s Journey, and the Septenaries can be thought of as the journey itself, either as different paths, or more traditionally, as sections of that journey. Furthermore, the Fool represents undeveloped potential. They are truly a blank slate.
